David Akers writes, “All the early Carson City Mint Eagles are very rare and the 1876-CC is no exception.” PCGS has graded 27 as XF45 with 24 finer. Collector’s Universe prices this issue at $26,000.00 in XF45. In CAC, there are 5 in XF45 with 6 finer. CAC gives this issue a price of $23,000.00 in XF45.

This Centennial-year Carson City eagle is a challenging issue with its miniscule mintage of 4,696 pieces. Carson City specialist Rusty Goe estimates that 130 to 160 examples of the 1876-CC eagle exist today. The coins were produced in two batches: the first, that consisted of 2,580 examples, in February, and the second, with 2,116 coins, in May. All of those coins were released into circulation and no pristine examples were saved by collectors at the time. That has resulted in the 1876-CC being unknown in Mint State today. Presently, PCGS has certified three examples in AU58, with none finer, while NGC has also graded three pieces in AU58, also with none finer.
