BG- 856, 1876 California Fractional Gold 25C, Liberty Round NGC MS66PL R7
An exceedingly rare issue. Collectors Universe declares an estimated survival rate of only 6 to 7 coins. We have auction records for the BG-856 that go back to 1976. Throughout this time, there have been 11 appearances. Eight (8) of these appearances account for four (4) distinctly different coins. Therefore we would swap the R7+ with a Rarity-7 designation. The present coin is probably the coin in Bowers & Merena's 1993 Van Arsdall collection sale. Based upon photo-comparisons the issue comes mostly infected with spotting or other types of foreign matter adhered to the surfaces.
The present example is a Superb Gem with semi-prooflike surfaces and a crisp strike overall. We note a couple of inconsequential hairlines that keep this beauty from the MS67 classification.
