Here’s an attractive piece to add to your collection of California Fractional Gold varieties. Plus it the Finest Known of this rare variety. There have been 11 of the BG-796 graded by NGC. Of those, there are two in MS67PL with none finer. There are none finer than MS66 at PCGS. Collectors Universe gives this variety a price of $4,000.00 in MS67PL.

The obverse features a stunningly beautiful Indian Head design crafted by Christopher Ferdinand Mohrig that is quite different from the ubiquitous Indian Head cents that were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The main device is surrounded by thirteen stars and the date 1875 is found below. The reverse presents an attractive, well-crafted wreath with berries, within which is “1/4 DOLLAR CAL.”

It was on August 10, 1876, that Mohrig was arrested by the Secret Service for violating the 1864 law against private coinage. His stock and dies were seized and melted, which may explain the rarity of his varieties such as this one. Please see below for more specific details about this striking piece.
