1874 $10 Liberty Head Eagle NGC MS65
A crisp, Gem Brilliant Uncirculated example for a date one would not normally expect to exist in grades MS63 or better. According to Garrett/Guth, "the 1874 $10 is the fourth most common date from the 1870s (after 1878, 1879, and 1879-S)." From the original mintage is 53,160, it should not be difficult to locate any circulated exmaple, but at the Mint State level, 1874 eagles are scarce. ABove MS61, this date is very rare and tops out at the MS65 level. The record auction price for a Gem 65+ occurred on July 2019 at $118,227. The CU published price for MS65 is $75,000, while the CDN Greysheet places a Bid/Ask value at $45,000/$54,000. Interestingly, no coin have appeared for sale since the turn of this century. One notable PCGS MS64 realzied $28,800 on February 2018. The present specimen is impressively detailed with creamy luster that enlivens the beautifully preserved surfaces, generally pale wheat-gold with occasional deeper accents.
