1874-CC 10C Liberty Seated Dime NGC AU Details - CLASSIC "CC" rarity-!!!

6059240001

A classic Carson City rarity. The year 1874 saw this Carson City dime have a truly minuscule production of 10,817 pieces. Virtually none were saved, and this date was heavily circulated in the 1870s. Many specimens are found with surface problems, due to the mint using improperly prepared planchets with unalloyed silver from the Comstock Lode. The piece offered by AUCM, in its "Cleaned" AU Details grade, is a significant discount from a PCGS AU50 specimen that sold at Heritage Auctions in 2010 for $50,312.50. Over the years, NGC has graded only 5 original AU pieces, with PCGS grading 4 of them. The discriminating numismatist with significant resources should strongly consider this offering. There is no telling when an 1874-CC dime will be presented for sale again.

To offer such a coin is rare in itself. Therefore it is with immense pride that we at AUCM offer a great numismatic rarity: an 1874-CC Seated Liberty dime, graded NGC AU Details. Brian Greer writes in his reference on Seated Liberty dimes that the 1874-CC is "The unquestioned key to the series [excluding the uncollectible 1873-CC No Arrows]. Rare in any grade, and probably a full R6 in problem-free condition....Under intense demand and currently bringing well in excess of Trends prices, when available." It is so difficult to find uncirculated or even in AU that Louis Eliasberg's famed collection only included a VG-8 specimen.

Early Carson City dimes are among the most challenging in the entire Liberty Seated series for numismatists to acquire at any grade. There was virtually no collecting interest when the 1874-CC dimes were distributed to banks and the public. They were found primarily in the West, serving the commercial needs of local communities for several years. When interest in mint-marked coinage took hold, there were hardly any opportunities for Eastern numismatists to purchase an 1874-CC dime in any condition. Carson City expert Rusty Goe estimates that only 35-50 pieces exist in all grades today, "meaning that any example is a numismatic prize," wrote David Bowers in 2012. As an acknowledged key date in its series, the current offering should catch the eye of both Liberty Seated and Carson City mint enthusiasts.
