Here is a scarce example for the specialist in Carson City gold. This circulated specimen would be an excellent addition to your collection. This attractive piece has honest wear, for virtually all of the 1874-CC $5 Liberties were put into circulation.
In the Old West, hard money was the order of the day, and paper money was contemptuously derided. Imagine how many hands this coin passed through during the 1870s to the 1890s. According to Carson City specialist Rusty Goe, about 200-250 examples of the 1874-CC $5 Liberty survive today out of its small mintage of 21,198. PCGS has graded 13 as F15 with 127 finer. In CAC, there are 4 in F15 with 36 finer.
