According to David Akers, The 1874-CC is only relatively scarce as a date, and the collector who would like an example of this date should have little trouble tracking one down. He writes that “almost the entire population of 1874-CC twenties grades EF or less, and in AU condition the date is surprisingly scarce. In mint state, the 1874-CC is rare and in choice or gem Unc. the date is little short of unobtainable. I have personally never seen a gem and can recall only a single specimen that I would grade "choice." In my view, this issue, because of its closeness in date and mintage to the common 1875-CC, is unappreciated and underrated.”
PCGS has graded 315 as XF45 with 650 finer. Collectors Universe gives this issue a price of $6,250.00 in XF45. In CAC, there are 21 in XF45 with 117 finer.

It was in the year 1864 that Carson City (formally called 'Carson') was confirmed as the capital of Nevada with statehood. Therefore, economic development was no longer exclusively dependent upon the production of the silver and gold mines at the Comstock Lode. Until the decline of those mines in the 1880s, they were the focus of Carson City's economic importance as a freight and staging center, as well as a significant arrival point for much of the timber harvest of the Lake Tahoe basin.
The Carson City Mint was completed in 1869 and today serves as the Nevada State Museum. The Virginia & Truckee (V&T) Railroad was completed between Virginia City (the location of the Comstock Lode) and Carson City in 1867, with the main offices and shops of the railroad located in Carson City. By 1874, the year this coin was stuck as well as the year the Comstock mines reached their peak of production, 36 trains a day passed through Carson City.
