BG- 728, 1873 California Fractional Gold 25C, Liberty Octagonal NGC MS68 R3
This coin is part of the elite few that have been assigned the highest grade to a California Fractional gold coin. At this time, NGC has certified four coins (including the present BG-728) - a BG-713, BG-714 and a BG-808. PCGS has certified a BG-111 as MS68 Prooflike, a coin which happened to be one of the 100+ recovered from the S.S. Central America shipwreck.
This is a grade that is distinctly hard to price, but some auction activity does gives us a clue. In August of 2014, Heritage sold the BG-714 (N68*) for $9,106. A year later the BG-713 was offered by the same company during the Chicago ANA Sale (N68) and it brought $4,818. We traced this BG-713 back and photomatched it in a PCGS MS67 holder whihc could account for the lower APR. More recently, the PCGS BG-717 example sold for $6,600. That's all we know...!
