Here’s a stunningly attractive variety in the extensive California Fractional Gold series. BG-794 is a very scarce to rare Christopher Ferdinand Mohrig variety that was discovered by California Fractional gold specialist Kenneth W. Lee. NGC has graded a total of only 15 pieces of this variety. They have awarded the gem grade of MS65 to 5 examples, with just 3 finer. With its bright yellow-golden coloration and rich red patina on both sides, this would be a great addition to your collection of Fractional Gold coins.
The obverse presents an attractive, well-crafted Indian head design. Inspired by, but not a slavish copy of the ubiquitous Indian Head cent, this specimen is a breathtaking tiny treasure. Thirteen stars surround the Indian head and the 1873 date is below. The reverse offers an intricate wreath with berries, within which is found 1/4 DOLLAR CAL.

Obverse: 13 stars around large Indian head. The 73 touches the hair on the nape of the neck of 1st feather of headdress, 7th and 8th stars to left of 4th and 5th feathers of headdress.
Reverse: 1-4 DOLLAR CAL within wreath. A curled leaf below the D and a berry the bottom right of the R. No period after CAL. Same as BG-795 & BG-796.
