1873-CC $1 Liberty Seated Silver Dollar NGC VF Details - rare!
“This is the most famous of all Carson City Mint Liberty Seated dollars and also the rarest,” writes David Bowers.
This was the same year the Trade dollar made its debut. Bowers reports that “Mintage was 1,000 in January and 1,300 in March,” giving us a total of 2,300 pieces. Bowers believes that even though most were melted, he estimates that between 750 and 1000 were put into circulation in the West.
“The 1873 Carson City standard silver dollar is a rare coin,” writes NGC Coin Explorer, “with an estimated 100 survivors in all grades.” Collectors with the necessary resources to acquire this piece should act soon, for, as Bowers writes, “there are very few 1873-CC dollars to be had in any grade, and a great deal of patience is often required to locate one.”
Of the strike, NGC Coin Explorer reports, “Aside from the weak LIBERTY characteristic of CC-Mint Seated Liberty Dollars, most examples are reasonably well struck.” NGC has graded 33 original examples of the 1873-CC and 61 of them with “Details” grades. However, since PCGS has graded 101 original pieces, it appears that there have been numerous multiple resubmissions at both grading services of this truly great rarity.
