BG- 793, 1873 California Fractional Gold 25C, Indian Octagonal PCGS MS63 R5+
Here’s an attractive example to include in your collection of California Fractional Gold varieties. Plus it is a more affordable variety from the well-regarded San Francisco manufacturer of Fractional Gold, C.F. Mohrig. PCGS has graded 13 as MS63 with 19 finer. Collectors Universe prices this variety at $425.00 in MS63.
The obverse exhibits an attractive, well-crafted Indian head design. It is inspired by, but is not a slavish copy of the ever-present Indian Head cent. This specimen is a stunning miniature treasure. Thirteen stars surround the Indian head and the 1873 date is found below. The reverse offers an elaborate wreath with berries, within which is found 1/4 DOLLAR CAL.
It was on August 10, 1876, that Mohrig was arrested by the Secret Service for being in violation of the 1864 law against private coinage. His stock and dies were seized and melted.
