The Liberty head $20 double eagles produced in 1873 are available in both the ‘Open 3’ and the ‘Closed 3.’ The Open 3 is common on Philadelphia Mint issues, while the Closed 3 is rare. But what is the difference between the two? Take a look at the larger ball at the lower curve of the 3. You will notice that the diameter of the ball is about the same size as the opening and would pass through it. On the Closed 3 variety, the lower ball would not pass through the constricted opening.
