Although the mintage of 20,770 pieces makes this Carson City half eagle more available than most dates from this Mint, there are probably no more than 150 around today. Furthermore most of those that do exist come in well circulated grades. As this is one of the lowest grades certified, we love the lure of history surrounding it-! Can you imagine the pockets this coin has seen - tor he gambling tables this coin has been thrown down upon!
Demand for gold coins was strong back when these were struck, they were in high need for transactions in both banking and commerce. Hence, no one thought to set aside any of these sparkling fresh coins at the time they were available, they were just spent as intended. Today, with lore and history of the Wild West comes alive when any coin from Carson City is examined. Carson City was a bit of a rough and tumble town, filled with silver miners from the Comstock discoveries, and much of the gold and silver mined in that region passed into the Carson City Mint for coinage.
