1869 $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle PCGS AU58
Russell's Notes: This is very rare and elusive coin in any grade. As an AU58, it is well within the Condition Census and I must say, after digging in deeper into the auction records for the issue in AU55-58 grades, this specimen is better than nearly all others. I found it last appearing in a Heritage sale encapsulated in a NGC AU58 holder (958123-009). In that sale, Heritage described it as:
"A predictably elusive With Motto five, the 1869 is just as rare as its mintage of 1,785 pieces implies. As usual for this issue, the fields retain considerable semi-reflective qualities despite numerous tiny abrasions. The features are well struck throughout with only slight softness noted over the eagle's neck feathers. An original piece, the surfaces have taken on a subtle overlay of reddish-golden patina. Census: 7 in 58, 2 finer (3/14).
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2001), lot 8211.*" It brought $7,637.50 in 2014.

*Incidentally, this coin didn't meet the $5,500 reserve in 2001 so it sdid not sell.
