BG-1073, 1868 California Fractional Gold 50C, Indian Round NGC MS63 R7+
Here’s a very rare piece from the German-born San Francisco jeweler, Christopher Ferdinand Mohrig. It was on August 10, 1876, that Mohrig was arrested by the Secret Service for violating the 1864 law against private coinage. His stock and dies were seized and melted, which may explain the rarity of his varieties such as this one.
No doubt, there were numerous examples of the BG-1073 among the stock that was seized and melted, for PCGS reports that there are only 4 to 5 of that variety known today. NGC has graded one piece as MS63 with none finer in mint state. Collectors Universe prices this variety at $3,250.00 in MS63.
