1868 50C Liberty Seated Half Dollar PCGS AU58

This is a great looking coin. This makes it a really Great Type Coin, and at a relatively low price! Out of its mintage of 417,600, there have been only 158 of them graded by PCGS. Of those, just 7 carry the very desirable grade of AU58, with 35 finer (as of 5/2021). In fact, even though it is graded AU58, it has the look of an MS63 specimen! Look at the images of this coin with its clean surfaces and no noticeable abrasions. There is very little evidence of rub on the high points. The strike is sharp and it is covered with delightful golden toning on both sides. This would be great in a type set of AU Seated half dollars, or AU half dollars from throughout U.S. history. You can save a lot of money if you collect PQ (premium quality) AU coins vs. MS62 or MS63. With pieces like this, it is difficult to tell the difference between AU and BU!

1868 50C Liberty Seated Half Dollar PCGS AU58

We at AUCM are quite pleased to offer for your consideration a Great Type Coin, an 1868 Seated Liberty half dollar graded PCGS AU58. Ron Guth writes, "Many of the [Philadelphia] half dollars from the 1860s have small mintages relative to their branch mint counterparts and the 1868 is no exception. It shows a mintage of 417, 600 pieces compared to 1,160,000 for the San Francisco Mint. As a result, the 1868 Half Dollar is much scarcer than might be expected, the price is much higher than that of a normal 'type' coin, and it is surprisingly difficult to locate in Mint State..." This is not an easy coin to find. The low mintage of this issue was due to the fact that silver coins were not circulating at par with contemporary federal paper money. Therefore the need for half dollars in the Eastern U.S. was limited.  Consequentially, Philadelphia saw a minor mintage when compared to the San Francisco issue. Worn down examples are easy to locate. However, 1868 half dollars become scarce in grades as low as fine.  That makes this AU58 piece quite significant.
