1866 $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle, with Motto PCGS MS60
The 1866 is scarce in all grades, comparable to the 1865, 1872, 1874 and 1875 Liberty head double eagles. However, it is a greater rarity than the latter three dates in uncirculated condition. Most known 1866's grade in the VF-AU range. Average uncirculated (grading MS60) examples are known but are rare.
PCGS has graded 28 as MS60 with 64 finer. Collector’s Universe prices this issue at $10,500.00 in MS60.
The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added to double eagles for the first time in 1866, making it the first year of the Type 2 Double Eagle. Writes Heritage Auctions, “Examples of this first-year issue are seldom seen in problem-free AU condition. Uncirculated representatives are out of reach for most collectors.”
