1864 St. Peter & St. Paul Cathedral, Philadelphia PA Silver Medal NGC MS64
Designed by Anthony C. Paquet.
1864/1890 St. Peter and St. Paul Cathedral, Philadelphia. A magnificent proof. Struck in silver. 80 mm. Struck to commemorate the completion of the cathedral in 1864. The obverse has been hand engraved to record the consecration date of June 30, 1890. However, the reverse is what this medal is all about. It is intricately detailed and shows a nice perspective down the central nave of the cathedral. Curiously, this exceptional piece of medallic art was engraved by Anthony Paquet. Paquet is not known for artistic or particularly inspired renderings of patterns for the Mint. But this piece shows that he was particularly skilled at architectural rendering and perspective. But check out the amazing toning - it is breathtaking-!!
