This is an 1864 California fractional gold piece, graded a Mint State 63 Prooflike by NGC and created by Robert B. Gray & Co., as indicated by the initial "G" located on the obverse and below the bust of Liberty . Currently there is a census of 7 coins in this grade with 4 finer. The coin features the Liberty Octagonal design, the most popular of the California Fractional Gold series, with HALF DOLLAR inscribed and surrounded by a decorative border, the popular Civil War date of 1864 below. A lovely example of early American gold coinage, this Liberty Octagonal piece will add class to any collection with its brilliant surfaces and strong strike.
