1864 $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle PCGS AU58
Rare Civil War era gold $20 double eagle!
Most of this issue was put into circulation in 1864. When considering that PCGS has graded only 289 original examples out of a substantial mintage of 204,235, we conclude that the vast majority of the 1864 twenties were hoarded during the Civil War and later sold for their melt value. PCGS has graded 47 examples as AU58 with 32 finer. Collectors Universe gives this issue a price of $30,000.00 in AU58.

This coin displays superior eye appeal. Doug Winter writes, “The natural coloration is very attractive with medium to deep green-gold or medium yellow-gold and rose hues. It has become hard to find an 1864 double eagle with good color as many have been dipped or processed. Choice, original examples with good color are worth significant premiums over typical coins.” This piece offered by AUCM is the exception to Winter’s findings. It is a “Choice, original example with good color” that is decidedly difficult to locate. This coin will be a highlight of a quality collection of Type One Liberty Head double eagles.
