How often do we have a chance to see small denomination San Francisco mint gold coins? Not very often - they're just WAY too scarce! The 1863 quarter eagle is no exception. This is a well-circulated example from an original mintage of 10,800. One look at the population reports and we quickly determine this coin is RARE in all grades.
Garrett and Guth call the 1863-S gold quarter eagle a "very rare and generally under-appreciated date," noting that most of these saw immediate and heavy circulation. Most authors estimate the surviving population is a mere 70 or 80 pieces.
