PCGS (and NGC) population of one (1) with one (1) finer as a MS63+ and theortectically impounded in the D.L. Hansen Collection and unavailable for quite some time to come. Even before the recovery of the shipwrecks S.S. Brother Jonathan (sank July, 1865) and the S.S. Republic (sank October, 1865), the 1861-S double eagle was a very rare coin in Mint State, and remains so today. The list of recovered 1861-S $20s on the S.S. Brother Jonathan did not include any Mint State coins, according to the Appendix I of The Treasure Ship S.S. Brother Jonathan. Only 14 Mint State coins were recovered from the S.S. Republic, with the highest grading MS62 (one coin).
