1858 $3 Indian Princess Three Dollar NGC MS62
David Akers: “it is doubtful [that] more than 75-100 … pieces still exist”
With a slight mintage of only 2,133 coins, the 1858 three dollar Indian Princess is uber-rare in each and every grade. Many later dates—with extremely low mintages—in the series were heavily saved by dealers and speculators for their numismatic potential. However, the 1858 was produced at a time when few high-grade pieces were saved, which accounts for its absolute rarity in any Mint State grade.
NGC has graded 3 as MS62 with just one finer (MS63). Collectors Universe prices this rare issue at $20,000.00 in MS62.
David Akers writes, “The 1858 is the first in a long line of low mintage Philadelphia Mint three dollar gold pieces .… Most known specimens of the 1858 are well worn with VF and EF examples predominating. Actually, an 1858 in any grade is rare and it is doubtful [that] more than 75-100 total pieces still exist. Strictly uncirculated specimens are naturally very rare …”
