1858-C $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle NGC AU55
Here’s a great coin to add to your collection. Writes Doug Winter, “The 1858-C is among the more common Charlotte half eagles .…[However,] In properly graded AU55 to AU58 it is scarce. This is still a very rare coin in Uncirculated with just a dozen or so known.” Winter also tells us that, “The 1858-C is one of the best struck Charlotte half eagles.”
NGC has graded 49 of the 1858-C $5 as AU55 with 64 finer. Collectors Universe prices this issue at $7,500.00 in AU55.
Jeff Garrett writes, “A fairly large number of 1858-C half eagles have been offered at auction during the past two decades. Most of the coins offered for sale and certified by the major grading services have been in the Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated grade range. The date is scarce, but it is also one of the more readily available half eagles from the Charlotte Mint.”
