1857-S $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle, 20A PCGS MS64 Prooflike Ex.SS Central America
Doug Winter tells us, "A very small number of 1857-S double eagles [retrieved from the SS Central America] were designated as either Prooflike (PL) or Deep Mirror Prooflike (DMPL) by PCGS."
Continues Winter, of the Prooflike 1857-S specimens, "These are some of the most visually arresting coins from the shipwreck .... These are no doubt very scarce and very flashy coins..." Winter tells us that over 5,000 1857-S double eagles were discovered among the tragic ruins of the SS Central America.
But how many of them were Prooflike? Winter reports that only 23 of that massive hoard were awarded PL (Prooflike) designation by PCGS. Please take a careful look at the images. This piece has shimmering reflective surfaces—and the design elements are razor-sharp. A discerning enthusiast of shipwrecked gold and high-end Liberty head double eagles with the necessary resources should carefully consider this offering. Such coins rarely come to market. Don't let this one get away.
