1857-S $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle, 20F PCGS MS63 Ex. SS Central America
A VERY SPECIAL COIN, INDEED-! Not only is this coin prooflike in appearance, but note the SERIAL NUMBER (0085). This is the eighty-fifth coin certified and 85th coin pulled from the ocean floor by the Odyseey Marine's submersible robotic arm. Imagine the excitment of the crew as the first tray of individaully spaced gold coins was brought to the surface after 140 years in 8,000 feet of water! This coin was in that tray!
Not only that, but the 20F variety plays some signficance, as well. Back in 2004 when all of the SS Central America gold coins were certified by PCGS with these popular gold foil inserts, the PCGS population data was divided up by the variety numbers in the pop reports. Of the 20F variety, only 258 coins were recovered in all grades. Nine (9) graded MS63 and a mere three (3) graded MS64. By contrast, there were 2,320 of the 20A variety recovered.
Extra bang-for-the-buck, in our humble opinion!
