1857 $10 Liberty Head Eagle PCGS MS60
Desirable rarity—only 4 in (PCGS) MS60 with 3 finer!
Acquiring this example would be a stunning coup for the specialist in rare Liberty Head Eagles.
“The 1857 is a very rare and underrated date,” writes David Akers. “It is not often available in any condition and when offered for sale, VF or EF is the grade. A small number of AU examples are known but I have seen only two strictly uncirculated pieces and neither one was choice.”
PCGS has graded 4 as MS60 with 3 finer. Collector’s Universe gives this issue a price of $25,000.00 in MS60.
With a scant mintage of 16,606, this issue is considered a ‘sleeper’ among the No Motto Liberty Eagle series. Contemporary numismatists saw it as merely bullion. According to research, the entire production went into circulation, and after the advent of the Civil War, it was hoarded, along with many other gold issues of the time.
