Christian Gobrecht, who designed the Liberty head for the $10 eagle and other gold issues. Image: Wikimedia Commons.
According to evidence, Christian Gobrecht worked for the U.S. Mint as early as 1823. That was upon the passing of Chief Engraver Robert Scot. However, that were merely a temporary position until the new Chief Engraver, William Kneass, was brought in during January of 1824. Gobrecht became a “Second” engraver, and not an assistant, after Kneass suffered a stroke in August of 1835.
It was after Kneass’ death in 1840 that Gobrecht was appointed Chief Engraver. His greatest work is considered to be the Seated Liberty design, based upon renderings by Thomas Sully and Titian Peale, which appeared on the dollar until 1873 and the half dollar up until 1891. He also designed the popular liberty head for the gold $2.50, $5.00, and $10.00 issues. After his passing in 1844, James B. Longacre was appointed Chief Engraver.
