1855 $50 Kellogg & Co. California Gold - Commemorative Restrike PCGS Gem Proof Ex.SS Central America
This piece was struck on September 10, 2001, The Day Before the World Stood Still (the 9/11 attacks)-!
Here is a gorgeous gem proof restrike of the famous $50 1855 Kellogg & Co. slug to add to your collection. Only 14 of the original $50 slugs have survived into the 21st century. Housed in a PCGS holder, this dramatic restrike was produced under the authority of the California Historical Society in San Francisco.
This $50 gold piece was struck from original Kellogg & Humbert ingots recovered from the tragic wreckage of the SS Central America, which lay upon the bottom of the ocean for over 130 years. Interestingly, the original dies from Kellogg & Co. were utilized to craft this beautiful commemorative coin. Plus, they were struck on a coin press at the San Francisco Mint. This restrike issue was limited to 5,000 pieces.
