1855 $50 Kellogg California Gold - Commemorative Restrike PCGS PR69 DCAM Ex.SS Central America w/Box
Here's something unquestionably different for the numismatist. It is a sensational restrike of the original $50 1855 Kellogg slug--of which there are only about 14 originals known to have survived into the 21st century. Housed in the exclusive PCGS Gold Label holder, which was employed for the gold coins from the SS Central America, this restrike was authorized and produced by the California Historical Society in San Francisco. PCGS has graded this beauty as Proof 69 Deep Cameo.
This $50 gold piece was struck from authentic Kellogg & Humbert ingots recovered from the wreckage of the tragic SS Central America, which sat upon the ocean’s floor for more than 130 years. This commemorative coin contains 1309 grains of .887 fine gold. Interestingly, the original dies from Kellogg & Co. were used to make this beautiful commemorative coins. And they were produced on a coin press at the San Francisco Mint. This commemorative issue was limited to 5,000 pieces.
