Low Rarity-5. Gold 50C Liberty Head Round. Period One - circulating issues between 1852 and 1856. Redbook Type: Small Liberty Head and Date 1854 / HALF DOL, CALIFORNIA GOLD Around Wreath. Made by Antoine Louis Nouizillet.
Among the leading producers of California Fraction Gold coinage was Antoine Louis Nouizillet, who was active in that realm from 1852 to 1858. His first appearance in San Francisco was in the city directory dated September 8, 1852, when he was partners in a jewelry firm with Isodore Routhier. However, the December 1852 directory has him listed twice: as Nouizillet & Co, Jewelers, and also a listing solely under his name. Another colleague during this period was the diesinker M. Deriberpie.
PCGS has graded 63 examples of the BG-431 variety. There are 14 in MS63 with 3 finer. Plus this great collectible is housed in the classic PCGS 'Old Green Label holder.' This piece offers a wonderful reddish patina in the fields on both side.
