1854 $3 Indian Princess Three Dollar PCGS Proof-58 (CAC)
Typically, the first year of issue for a denomination would be struck in proof format. The 1854 three dollar piece is an example of this, with ten to twelve proofs known. This output was rather high for the time, since the next date close to a dozen known is the 1862. It appears that a few of the 1854 proofs are impaired. Possibly, too many were struck in the first place and the balance was spent. Both the Munoz and Auction ’88 pieces were lightly circulated, and another impaired specimen was reportedly in Michael Brownlee’s hands in the late 1980s. The 1854 is actually a one-year type. The word “DOLLARS” on the reverse is in small letters, whereas later issues show the word in larger type. On the obverse, traces of die file marks can be seen between the border and MER of AMERICA. Another file mark is visible from the top leaf on the right section of the wreath to the rim at 12:05. On both sides, the dentils are tightly spaced.
