Here's an opportunity to acquire a lustrous example of the finest known of this truly rare circulating California Fractional Gold variety BG-522. NGC has graded 4 of this issue with 1 in MS62 with none finer, while PCGS has graded 18 of them with 2 in MS62 with none finer. The obverse presents Liberty head facing left, surrounded by 8 stars. The reverse presents 1 DOLLAR 1853 within a beaded circle. There is a wide '53' in the date. Around the beaded circle at the rim is CALIFORNIA GOLD - DERI. 'DERI' is short for M. Deriberpie, a private engraver who had a shop at 58 Kearny Street in San Francisco. This piece has radial die cracks emanating from the rim that appear to be electrifying Lady Liberty. Heritage writes this is "The only collectible variety from Breen's obverse 7, since BG-521 is R.8."
