Here’s an attractive O-Mint piece to add to your collection. The mintage was low at 51,000, which makes it a better date in the higher AU grades and above. Writes Doug Winter, “The 1853-O is the third most available New Orleans eagle of this type, trailing the 1851-O and 1847-O.… it is excessively rare in Uncirculated with just two or so currently known.” It is scarce and undervalued in the higher AU grades.
NGC has graded 88 as AU55 with 63 finer. Collectors Universe gives this issue a price of $6,000.00 in AU55.
