1853-O $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle PCGS AU58
Greatly desired Condition Rarity in AU58!
The 1853-O is a rare New Orleans issue with a mintage of only 71,000 pieces. Most of that production entered circulation. This low mintage could be attributed to the anticipated opening of the San Francisco Mint the following year (1854). Thus, gold being mined in California could be minted into coins at the new mint, and not be transported across the country to New Orleans, which was over 2,000 miles from the gold fields of California.

PCGS has graded 14 as AU58 with only 3 finer. Collector’s Universe prices this issue at $45,000.00 in AU58.
Examples of this issue are always in great demand—no matter the grade. According to Stack’s Bowers, most of the 1853-O double eagles were shipped overseas and later melted. The number of this issue that survives today is estimated at 350 to 500 pieces by various experts—and Mint State coins are all prohibitively rare. Only three pieces have been certified as mint state by PCGS and the finest is a single MS63.
