Here is a rare beauty to add to your collection. The 1852-O Gold dollar is the second rarest of this series from the New Orleans Mint. It is difficult to find this issue in the higher Uncirculated grades. Doug Winter reports, “The 1852-O gold dollar is moderately scarce in circulated grades and becomes scarce in MS61 to MS62. It is very scarce in MS63, rare in MS64 and very rare in Gem.”
The 1852-O had a mintage of only 140,000. Jeff Garrett writes, “The 1852-O is very scarce and even circulated examples should bring a higher premium.” NGC has graded 1 as MS63+ with 14 finer. Collector’s Universe prices this issue at $6,750.00 in MS63+.
Of the luster, Winter writes, “The luster seen on this issue is very good with most higher quality examples displaying a rich, frosty texture. Some have a somewhat granular texture. I have never seen a piece that was reflective.”
