Here’s a great piece at a really great price to add to your collection. NGC has graded 32 as MS61 with only 9 finer! As discussed above, the AU Capital Management price is $2,500 less than the Collector’s Universe price.
David Akers writes, “The mintage of the 1852 [263,106] is fairly high by No Motto standards and almost identical to that of the 1851-O which is only a moderately scarce date. However, the 1852 is very scarce in all grades and rare in AU condition. … It is certainly not the "common date" type coin the mintage would lead one to believe. No proofs were struck.”
Garrett and Guth, in their 2006 gold Encyclopedia, write that “the 1852 eagle is a relatively common date, but nowhere near as common as the mintage indicates.”
