"1852" United States Assay Office of Gold $50. Uniface Silver Obverse Restrike. K-1a. Rarity-8. Thin Planchet. NGC MS63.
45.8 mm. Remarkably we are offering a second example of this type, an obverse restrike of the United States Assay Office of Gold $50 "slug" signed KUHNER F. under the eagle. Together we have a two-thirds of the known population.
Technically a copy, as the eagle is in the style of the 1853 $20 gold issues, which Kuhner did engrave. Frosty silver surfaces with areas of dark pearly gray, especially near the bottom edge. Rare, as only two or three examples of the K-1a variety are believed extant.
