1852 $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle PCGS AU58+ (CAC)
This specimen is from the first 'golden era' of Philadelphia Mint-struck double eagles; this very brief 'era' stretches from the creation of the famed pattern of 1849 up to 1854, when the San Francisco Mint first began its operations.
As economic conditions would suggest, the main Mint in Philadelphia produced the bulk of production of double eagles during that time. The years 1850 to 1854 saw over a million pieces struck each year, with multiple-million strikings in the middle years of 1851 and 1852. The 1852 issue saw extensive circulation with no examples grading above MS64 by NGC. There are 7 graded AU58+ by PCGS, with 163 finer. In CAC, there are 68 in AU58 and AU58+, with 42 finer.
The Second Philadelphia Mint, where this great collectible was struck in 1852.
