1852 $10 California Gold Eagle - Augustus Humbert PCGS VF35 Ex.SS Central America
Fomerly offered in 2015 Orlando FUN Signature auction, this specfimen was described as:
"1852 $10 Humbert Ten Dollar VF35 PCGS. K-10, Low R.4. Ex: S.S. Central America. SSCA 7036. A surprising number of Territorial gold pieces were recovered along with the numerous gold bars and an astonishing number of double eagles -- a recovery effort that continues to this day. Much in the way the perceived rarity of several twenty dollar gold dates has changed with the shipwreck treasure, so has the availability of several Territorial pieces. This ten dollar Humbert gold shows moderate wear and light, lemon-gold coloration typical of the recovered seawater coins. Pleasing detail and virtually no abrasions are visible. Most of the wear appears on the central devices, with the die crack beneath UNITED confirming the late die state. Housed in its original gold-label PCGS holder. Listed on page 386 of the 2015 Guide Book."
A very interesting description for this variety appeared in the December 2000 Christies auction catalog, lot 115. This lot was the finest of 63 examples recovered and certified by PCGS as MS62.
