SSCA 6646. A total of eight (8) New Orleans mint 1851 gold double eagles were recovered during the first exploration of the S.S. Central America at the turn of our last century, a paltry number when compared to the 1857-S and 1856-S issues that have dominated the effort*. It is unusual nowadays for us to see ANY New Orleans mintmark gold to offered for sale from this legendary shipwreck.
