1850-O G$1 Liberty Head Gold Dollar PCGS MS63
Gold specialist Doug Winter tells us that “The 1850-O is easily the scarcest of the five Type One New Orleans gold dollars. It is the only issue that is hard to locate in the lower uncirculated grades and is quite rare above MS62.”
With its mintage of only 14,000 this is indeed a very rare issue in its assigned grade. PCGS has graded 8 as MS63 with only 3 finer. NGC has awarded the grade of MS63 to five examples with a mere one finer. Continues Winter, “The 1850-O is generally one of the better struck New Orleans gold dollars. It is usually seen with sharp central details and very strong details on the borders, including full denticles and radial lines in the stars."
"The date and mintmark are typically full as well.” Writes Jeff Garrett, “The 1850-O issue has by far the lowest mintage of any New Orleans gold dollar. This date is at least as rare as many Dahlonega and Charlotte issues and can be considered underrated at current levels.”
