1850-O $10 Liberty Head Eagle PCGS AU58
Desirable and rare 1850-O ten with attractive greenish-yellow color!
The 1850-O Liberty eagle is rare in AU grades, making this specimen an important opportunity for New Orleans gold collectors. Heritage Auctions writes in 2022, “The 1850-O eagle remains as an important rarity in grades above XF.” This is a truly rare antebellum issue from the historic New Orleans Mint.
Commercial use and subsequent melting claimed the vast majority of 1850-O eagles, resulting in most surviving pieces grading VF to XF. Considering the extreme rarity of Mint State pieces, upper end About Uncirculated examples such as this offering from AU Capital Management are in high demand among serious Liberty Head eagle and New Orleans Mint aficionados.
Doug Winter writes, "The 1850-O eagle is relatively common in VF and EF grades. It is very scarce in properly graded AU50 to AU53 and very rare in AU55 to AU58." There are only three graded mint state by PCGS, making the acquisition of such almost impossible. The mintage is 57,500, and PCGS has graded 9 in AU58, with 3 finer. Collector’s Universe prices this issue at $27,500.00 in AU58.
