Here is an iconic portrait of President Abraham Lincoln produced as a daguerreotype. It is a dramatic and rare artifact of our 16th president. According to the Library of Congress, this image is a reversed version of Meserve Lincoln Photo 87 and Meserve Lincoln Photo 108 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
This photo of the martyred president was taken on February 9, 1864, by Mathew Brady in his Washington, D.C. studio. It is housed in a Union Case, upon which is inscribed “Constitution and the Laws” upon a scroll held by an eagle. It is surrounded by Union Shields at the four corners. There is an embossed red velvet facing compartment. The original glass negative is in the Meserve Collection.
