1849-O G$1 Liberty Head Gold Dollar PCGS MS63 (CAC)
Here is a beautiful example of the first gold dollar struck at the famous New Orleans Mint with its distinctive ‘O’ mintmark. It is also the first year of the popular Gold $1 coin that was only produced from 1849 to 1889. So, when you purchase this coin, you get two ‘firsts’ in one sparking specimen! With its limited mintage of 215,000 this is not a common coin to acquire for your collection. PCGS has graded 48 with the grade of MS63 with 36 finer. In CAC, there are 11 in MS63 with only 16 finer. This piece is well-struck and lustrous. The iconically American Liberty head design on the gold dollar was employed as the model for many varieties of the ubiquitous California Fractional Gold series that saw production mostly in San Francisco beginning in 1852.
