Here is a rare $5 gold piece from the historic Charlotte Mint to add to your collection. Only 64,823 examples were struck of this issue. PCGS has graded 10 as AU58 with only 17 finer. Gold specialist Doug Winter writes, “This is among the best struck half eagles from this mint. As a result, the 1849-C is very popular with type collectors who are seeking a single, well-produced example of this denomination .… The eye appeal for this date tends to be better than on most other Charlotte half eagles.”
