The year 1847 saw the mintage for Eagles from the New Orleans Mint reach a remarkable 571,500 specimens. That is more than double the second highest mintage of Eagles from the famed Southern mint, which was 263,000 in 1851. Consequently, the 1847-O is the most common No Motto Eagle from New Orleans.
Writes Doug Winter, “it becomes progressively harder to find in higher grades and is actually quite rare in Uncirculated.” NGC has graded 242 as AU53 with 442 finer. This attractive piece is a survivor of the tragic wreck of the SS Republic.
