1843 $2.50 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle NGC MS62
Here’s a beautiful—and rare—quarter eagle to include in your collection. Even though 100,546 were struck, it is not easy to acquire a mint state example. A possible reason may be excessive hoarding during the Civil War—and later being shipped overseas or domestic melting. Well, we at AUCM have one right here. Please look at the images of this small, golden treasure.
NGC has graded 8 as MS62 with a mere 5 finer. Collector’s Universe gives this issue a price of $6,000.00 in MS62.

Ron Guth writes, “For some reason, [in 1843] the U.S. Mints paid particular attention to Quarter Eagles, producing the highest mintages since 1836. Employees at the Philadelphia Mint alone produced over 100,000 Quarter Eagles for circulation, along with a handful of Proof examples. Despite the high original mintage, the 1843 Quarter Eagle appears to be the rarest Quarter Eagle of the year, even more rare than the 1843-C and 1843-D Quarter Eagles. Mint State examples are very scarce, with exactly [twenty-five] certified by PCGS, the finest of which [are two in] MS-64.” NGC has graded only 26 Mint State pieces of the 1843 quarter eagle.
