1843 $10 Liberty Head Eagle NGC AU58
The 1843 eagle is one of the more intriguing issues of the No Motto type. It has a respectable mintage of 75,462 examples, nonetheless it is scarcer than one would expect. Even with a number of pieces recently uncovered abroad, it remains rare in properly graded AU55 and very rare in AU58. The finest known at both NGC and PCGS is MS61, making this offering from AUCM near the top of the certified population.
NGC has graded 25 as AU58 with only 5 finer. Collectors Universe prices this issue at $20,000.00 in AU58. The total amount of certified original pieces at both grading services in 193. This points to possible hoarding during the Civil War and later exporting and melting.
