1841-D $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle, Tall D PCGS AU50
The 1841-D is an elusive Dahlonega Mint issue with its production of 29,392 pieces. The Tall D variety is very scarce in relation to its Small D counterpart, which itself is rare by the standards of the Liberty half eagle series. The Tall D variety is a major rarity among Dahlonega half eagles. It could be argued that the Tall D variety deserves its own listing in the Guide Book. This late die state specimen has strong obverse die cracks. One divides the obverse vertically, and that crack has a branch to the rim at 11 o'clock, and another branch reaches the denticles at 3 o'clock. In total, PCGS has graded only 19 examples of the Tall D variety. Of those, there are 2 in AU50 with 11 finer. Collectors Universe gives this variety a price of $9,000.00 in AU50.
